Presentation: "Evaluation of the Use of Immunohistochemistry to Identify Protein Biomarkers in Cancer Clinical Trials" “There is a growing interest in the evaluation of tissue based protein biomarkers in oncology clinical trials to determine drug efficacy and to identify surrogate endpoints and potential patient stratification markers. We have conducted an analysis of peer reviewed published full journal articles of oncology clinical trials over the time period 2005 to 2010 in which tissue based protein biomarkers were assessed by immunohistochemistry. We examine these findings in light of the critical factors required for successful evaluation of protein biomarkers in human clinical tissues and discuss the implications for successful clinical and analytical validation of biomarkers in general.”

The team of expert pathologists and scientists at Pathology Diagnostics Ltd. has recently shared 18 years of technical expertise with academic and industry scientists in a published review article in the internationally recognised journal ‘Biomarkers in Medicine: "There has been increased interest in the development of tissue based assays in biomarker development in recent years. Tissue based assays can add value and aid decision making in the early discovery stages of drug and biomarker development, as well as being developed for use as predictive biomarkers, and for patient stratification and prognostication in the clinic. The scientist must be aware of the legal and ethical issues related to the sourcing of human tissue samples. This review also discusses the limits of scope and critical aspects to success related to the use of the following tissue based methods: immunohistochemistry, tissue microarrays and automated image analysis. Future advances in standardisation of tissue biobanking methods, immunohistochemistry and quantitative image analysis techniques are also discussed."
